A medical team at Al Ain Hospital affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company “SEHA” was able to save a 15-year-old child who had suffered a severe stroke, resulting in the closure of the left carotid artery, which led to a severe deficiency in the perfusion of the left hemisphere. As a result, he was paralyzed on the right side of his body and lost the ability to speak.
Dr. Jamal Qutaish, Head of the Institute of Radiology and a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Al Ain Hospital, said that as soon as the child arrived at the emergency department at Al Ain Hospital, the medical staff dealt with his case with complete professionalism, and a multidisciplinary medical team was formed, which was able to diagnose the case through tomography and axial imaging. He added: "After diagnosing the case as a stroke, the medical team decided to transfer the patient to the Interventional Radiology Department, where a cerebral arterial catheter was made through an opening in the upper thigh not exceeding 2 mm, and the clot that closed the artery was reached and removed with a catheter and a special brain network. Which led to the restoration of blood flow and its access to the ischemic region of the brain.”
He emphasized that interventional radiologists have the competence and ability to quickly assess stroke patients and perform the emerging vascular thrombectomy, achieve good results and reduce the rate of disability, and the patient can recover his functions faster than the best medical treatment.
He explained that after performing a cerebral arterial catheterization, the patient's condition began to improve and he became able to move and speak.
